April, 2018: Journey to Freedom , Building Bridges

Sketch study from the Alberta Legislature public gallery inspired by Jason Kenney's motion declaring April 30 'Journey to Freedom Day' unanimously passed by the #Ableg assembly. Journey to Freedom Day Act is an Act recognizing April 30 of every year as a national day of commemoration of the exodus of Vietnamese refugees and their acceptance in Canada after the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975. When I came to Alberta in 1979 to work as a newspaper pressman for the @Edmontonsun the Sun Sponsored Vietnamese boat people and gave them jobs in our production plant. I really enjoyed working with my Vietnamese Canadian Co-Workers, some of Canada's very best newspaper pressman!

Ken K. Kuo Quack Quack my co-worker at the Edmonton Sun, In China people know life like a river, going down a river, you never know what lies around the next bend. Sometimes water is like rapids, very bad time and hard at living. Sometimes it's calm, very happy to be alive, but always changing. Sometimes good times, sometimes bad times, but always changing.

The civil uprising phase of the Syrian Civil War was an early stage of protests – with subsequent violent reaction by the Syrian Arab Republic authorities – lasting from March to 28 July 2011. The uprising, initially demanding democratic reforms, evolved from initially minor protests, beginning as early as January 2011 and transformed into massive protests in March. The uprising was marked by massive anti-government opposition demonstrations against the Ba'athist government of Bashar al-Assad, meeting with police and military violence, massive arrests and brutal crackdown, resulting in hundreds of casualties and thousands of wounded. Despite Bashar al-Assad's attempts to stop the protests with massive crackdown and use of censorship on one hand and concessions on the other, by the end of April, it became clear the situation was getting out of his control and the Syrian government deployed numerous troops on the ground.
